How I Organize My (Teeny-Tiny) Kitchen (A Short Series): #1 Space Savers

  • Buffer

Recently there was a guest post on Money Saving Mom called 5 Ways To Stay Organized In A Small Kitchen, by Saving By Making.  All of her suggestions were pretty much right on par, but of course everyone’s organizing needs are different, so I indicated in the comments section what things I do to save space and stay clean (ehem, as much as possible ;) ).  A fellow reader commented back to me that I should show some pics of my ideas.  So here they are!

I Use A Freezer Shelf To Stack Dishes Above Other Dishes:

These come in various sizes and heights so if you’re going to order any online then be sure that you get the right size.  Here’s what it looks like in my cabinets:

I have a black and a white one in there I like for making the best use of my vertical space.  Since I only have 2 cabinets for storing my dishware and glasses, this is the perfect solution.  I even have enough space leftover to store my grains!

I Hang Things on the Walls:

My motto is, “When out of space, hang it on the wall!”  My personal favorite space saver is my improvised wall hanging spice rack/pots and pans hanger:

My kitchen is so small and compact that trying to get an Innova Classicor Wrought-Iron Oval Pot Rack into it wouldn’t work well for me.  I’d have to hang it over my sink and, since I have a window over it, the thought of having all those pots obstructing my view of the outside world would drive me crazy.  So my solution was to hang them on the wall.

What you see here I found for $4 at a thrift store that was supposed to be for holding tin foil and saran wrap on the inside of a cabinet.  However, since I already had one of those, I intended to use it for my hair tools such as my curling and straightening irons.  When I got home, though, I suddenly had a brilliant idea to use it to hold my pots and pans as well as spices!  I’ll show you exactly what I did in another post some other day, so stay tuned!

I Use A Tension Rod To Hang Cleaners:

Hang Cleaners From A Tension Rod

My MIL emailed me this brilliant idea she’d gotten from someone else that I fell in love with!  It said to use a small tension rod to hang under the sink for your cleaners, but since the one I already had was too long to go under my sink, I simply hung it between my cabinets above the sink (high enough so it doesn’t obstruct my view, of course :) ).  I also have one of my large measuring cups that hangs up there quite nicely next to everything else.

Now I don’t have to go digging for whatever cleaner I wanna use because they’re all right there in plain sight and can be easily located.  As a bonus they don’t get knocked over when you’re reaching for them in the cabinet.  It makes me so happy.

Do you have a small kitchen?  How do you organize yours?

Take a closer look at how I altered my hair styling/saran wrap organizer into a pot hanger and spice rack.
