Laundry detergent is not only EXPENSIVE but most of the more popular ones are down right toxic! When I found out how incredibly simply it was to make homemade laundry detergent nearly 5 years ago I haven’t looked back since. It’s not completely safe to use (to me the safest stuff would be safe enough to eat and you can’t eat this), but it’s MUCH better than most detergents PLUS it is the cheapest stuff I’ve ever used!
So here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 bar of soap: I use dove sensitive skin with no sent. The less ingredients it has the better.
- Cheese grater
- 1 cup of Super Washing Soda. NOT baking soda although it’s made from the same company. This stuff is really cheap and lasts a VERY long time! Here’s what it looks like:
- 5 Jugs to store it in: I use milk jugs that have been washed out thoroughly.
- A 5 Gallon bucket.
- Water
Directions:
This is so simple it hurts. Ready? All you need to do is grate the soap, throw it in a small pot, cover it with water, put it on the stove on the lowest setting of heat you’ve got, and cover it. When it turns into a pure white liquid with no chunks in it then you’re ready to do the rest.
Heat your water up to the hottest you can get it, start filling up the bucket, at the soap and super washing soda and stir. make sure your water is hot! If it’s cold it’ll get chunky (ehem, I’m speaking from personal experience here). When you’ve filled the bucket up to 5 gallons then your done. Pour it into your jugs and that’s it!
You can use 1 cup per load. This stuff is also great for taking out stains. I used it on blood once and it came right out! One batch usually lasts our family of four 1-2 months.
Tell me what you think!
