I have this entertainment center we got from some military neighbors that were moving:
Since our TV hangs on the wall and there is a fireplace directly bellow it, we had no use for it as an entertainment center. But it could definitely be used as a coffee table! The problem I had was that it had a ton of scratches on its top (as you can see in the photo above) and its back was ugly and exposed:
So I decided that I was just going to cover it up using fabric. Remember the material I had left over from my DIY Bench Made Out Of Pallet Wood? I used it to cover up my “coffee table.”
I had so much fun with this and it turned out so divine I couldn’t wait to share this with ya’ll! I didn’t measure anything since I’m a lazy seamstriss like miss pink and polka dot (speaking of which, did you see my awesome couch slip cover??? She’s the reason I was able to make one myself…and so can you!).
Here are the materials I used:
- Fabric: how big your table is will depend on how much you’ll need. I know it’s annoying, but you can always run back to the store to get more if you didn’t get enough. Or use it for another project in case you got too much.
- Fringe: Joann’s carries this for ya.
- Staple Gun (a girl’s best friend):
- Glue Gun
(a girl’s bester friend {no that’s not a word, lol})
Here’s how I did it:
1. I laid the fabric right side up onto the top of the table and cut around. Just long enough to cover the sides of the top.
2. Then I stapled the fabric to the table top using a staple gun:
(I don’t know if you can see the staples, but I put arrows in to show you that they really are there).
3. After that I took more of the fabric wrong side facing me and pinned it to the already stapled fabric so it would stay up while I cut both sides and the bottom leaving at least 1 in of extra fabric on each side.
4. Then I folded the sides in and pinned it (follow the yellow dots down the fabric and you can see where I pinned it).
5. I also folded the bottom up to make the bottom seem and pinned (follow the yellow dots across the bottom of the fabric and you’ll see the bottom seem).
6. I did the same thing on the other side and then sewed the seem and cut the fabric back so it wasn’t flapping and getting in my way.
7. I repeated steps 3-6 for the other side of the table and the back side.
8. Then I matched the sides up to the correct sides of the table with the correct side of the fabric facing me and stapled them to the table.
9. After that I took my fringe and hot glued it to the table top sides to cover up the raw edges of the fabric:
Are You Ready For the Beautiful Before and After Pics?!?!?
Here’s a side shot too:
Do you LOVE??? I LOVE!!!
I could’ve just created a slip cover for this thang, but I was in a hurry to get it covered and didn’t have much time to do it. So this was my happy alternative.
We never put drinks onto it or put our feet on it, so I’m not worried about it staining. If, by some bizarre chance, it does get something awful spilled onto it, I’ll simply take it apart, sew it together, and then wash it.
Have you ever done a project similar to this before? Do tell!

Good job!!!
Thank you Semper Wifey!
Just a thought on your table. If you ever wanted to set and drinks on it, you could always get a piece of beveled glass for the top to protect the fabric.
Great idea, Brenda!!! Thanks so much for the tip! Any idea where I might be able to find a piece of glass like that?
Great idea!
Oh, thank you so much Stacy
