Quite often I find myself talking to friends in the military who have no idea what kind of benefits that are within their grasp. So I decided that it was important to include this post in my Military 101.
This is so easy you’ll be kissing me by the time I’m done with it.
Take Your Military ID Everywhere! Remember that military ID I taught you how to obtain? Not only is it your lifeline to the military, but it also opens you up to discounts galore!!!
You should never leave your house without your Military ID…EVER!!! You will be kicking yourself if you find out there’s a business offering a discount somewhere and you can’t get it because you don’t have your ID. You will need it as proof in order to get any kind off discount.
Who Gives Military Discounts? This is so broad of a question, it would take me too long to list all of the places that offer military discounts. However, for the most part, many of your retail stores, hotels, and restaurants offer at least %10 off of anything you buy.
Not All Businesses Are Created Equal. Not all businesses offer a military discount. Likewise, if it is a chain or franchise you’re dealing with, not all of their stores will offer a military discount.
For example, you may find a Macy’s in a military town that offers 10% off discounts to all military personnel and their dependents, but you could find another Macy’s in a different town that does not offer a military discount. I find this to be rare, but it does happen, so don’t ever assume!
Call First. If you are not 100% sure of what a particular business offers military then call them! Don’t walk into a hotel thinking you’ll get a discount because you may end up with none. Every business is different so call as much as is necessary to be sure that you have all the info you need before you walk into the business. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is thinking that you’ll be getting a discount somewhere only to be charged the full amount. Verify verify verify!
Don’t take An Associate’s word for it. If I’ve shopped at a store such as a Lowe’s that has multiple stores across the country and was able to get a 10% discount at one, but an associate at another said I couldn’t get a discount at their store, I call the corporate office to verify. If the corporate office says all of their stores offer a military discount then I ask them to send me a copy of their policy so I can then print it up and take it to the store as proof.
Find Out The Rules Of The Discount. Some stores will allow you to not only use your military discount, but will let you use a coupon in conjunction with it. Others will not.
For example, just today a friend of mine gave me a 10% off coupon to Lowe’s. Not sure if I could use it and still get another 10% off with my military ID I called Lowe’s to verify. I found out that I could only use one or the other, not both.
There are times when stores are offering a special in which military can not only use their ID’s to get their original 10% off discount, but can also get an extra 10% off during a certain time (such as memorial day coming up). Or you can get a free meal at a restaurant, although this one usually only pertains to personnel. Make sure you find out exactly what you can get.
